Think About Going Green When Selecting a Moving Company

Opinions differ, but many people believe that we are gradually using up our world's resources and potentially causing lasting damage to the environment. If we all make small changes in our daily lives, we can make a difference.

Some of those changes include recycling our trash, choosing green building materials or even going with a green moving company.

What Makes a Moving Company Green?

Moving to a new home can be a very wasteful process. Whether you were doing a self move, or using full-service movers, boxes and packing materials ended up at the landfill, and no one worried about how much gas was used for the trip. Some of the materials used by moving services are recyclable, but all too often they ended up in the trash instead, where they might last for decades.

We have entered a new era though, and many moving services are taking steps to help moving be more environmentally friendly. Here are some of the things you should look for when trying to find a green moving company:

  • Bio-diesel fuel: Some moving services are converting their trucks to bio-diesel fuel, which not only saves energy, but is more environmentally friendly. Moving trucks using bio-diesel fuel can take your belongings across the country or just to the other side of town.
  • Biodegradable packing materials: Green moving services have started using reusable packing materials, and in cases where they might not be practical, they are using biodegradable or recyclable packing materials.
  • Reusable boxes: Green moving services use plastic moving boxes which can be reused over and over. They may also use heavy cardboard boxes that can be used for several moves and then recycled. If you are planning a self move, these reusable and recyclable boxes may be available for your use.
  • Planting trees: Some green moving companies even plant five or ten new trees with every move they make.

Think about how much of a difference a green move could make with your three or four bedroom home, and all of the boxes and packing materials it might take to prepare for a cross country journey. Help make a difference by selecting a green moving company for your family's next relocation.
