Plan for a "Green" Moving Experience by Recycling Your Moving Supplies

Not many people enjoy moving--you are packing up your life and relocating it. It doesn't matter whether it's a short or long move, you are still packing and unpacking everything you own, and hoping it survives the journey. You may think there already are too many concerns while planning a move, but there is one important detail you should consider before even getting started. What happens to your moving supplies when you are done?

Landfills are full of moving supplies like boxes, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and crates, yet every time someone moves they need these products. Why not plan a "green" move, using moving supplies that can be recycled or reused?

"Green Moving Supplies"

Just about all of your moving supplies can be reusable or recyclable if you put a little thought and effort into it. Here are a few ideas you may want to consider:

Reusable boxes. Double- and triple-wall boxes are available in many sizes, and they usually come in a stack ready for you to put together. Not only do they provide a secure container for your moving needs, but they can be reused many times. Simply take them apart and save the reusable boxes for your next move, or donate them to a charitable organization for another family's "green" move.

Collect Your Packing Peanuts. Packing peanuts always seem to get everywhere when you are unpacking, but they can be quite valuable for protecting your prized possessions. Why not collect them in large trash bags as you unpack, so they can be ready for your next move. If you feel you may be staying put for a while, offer them, along with your reusable boxes, to another family.

Don't Pop that Bubble Wrap, Save It. Bubble wrap is another product that can be invaluable for moving, but unfortunately will linger at a landfill for years. When you are packing with bubble wrap, pack items in a manner that makes it easy to unwrap when the move is over. Unpacking can go more quickly, and you can save the sheets of bubble wrap. Once again, store it in your basement or attic for the future, or donate it.

Plastic Crates. Many moving and rental companies have plastic crates that can be rented for moving needs. They are available in many sizes and shapes. When you are done, just turn them back in.

These are just a few ideas for your "green" move. Recycling and reusing your moving supplies helps our environment, now and in the future.
