Portable Storage Units Are Convenient for Many Families

Moving is often a stressful experience, even when everything goes as planned. But now many people who are moving, downsizing, or renovating their homes are experience portable storage benefits - low cost, convenience and security.

Portable storage units are weatherproof containers that are delivered to your driveway or yard. You load the units yourself, and then you call the company to either pick up the empty unit when you're done with it, take a packed unit to a storage warehouse, or deliver the container to your new residence. You pay a monthly fee for using the container, and the price varies with the size of unit, how long you keep the unit, and whether you store the container in the company's warehouse or keep it on your own property.

Portable storage is a fast-growing segment of the self storage industry. Today there are several companies providing portable storage containers, and their services are available in more than 10,000 cities.

Portable Storage Benefits

Consider that portable storage units:

  • Can be packed at your own pace. You are not rushed by the accruing charges on a rental truck.
  • Are less work. You don't have to load a truck at your home, unload the truck at a fixed storage unit and then load a truck up again when you make a move to your final destination.
  • Usually can be stored in a climate-controlled warehouse. Many companies offer this benefit. If you need access to your possessions, you can call ahead and have the container set out for you.
  • Are useful if you are sending some items to storage and some to an interim home, such as an apartment that isn't big enough to hold everything.
  • Can be used to help stage your home for selling. You can temporarily remove and store extra furniture and possessions to make your house look less cluttered.
  • Keep items safe and out of the way during renovations to your home.
  • Help contractors securely store materials at construction sites.
  • Are available quickly. Place an order, and you might get same-day delivery.
  • Can be rented from one franchise area and delivered to a different area. This is useful if you are moving from one state to another.
  • Are secured with your own private lock.
  • Are easy to load, as the containers are ground level and don't require ramps.

Disadvantages of Portable Storage

Keep in mind the following possible disadvantages:

  • Some monthly rents increase over time if you keep the container on your property rather than paying the often higher price of storing it in the company's warehouse.
  • Neighbors might get annoyed if the unit is on your property for a long time.
  • Many towns and cities have passed ordinances regulating portable storage units. The company you choose should be able to inform you of any area restrictions.
  • Potentially hazardous materials, such as paint, lawn equipment, and fuel, cannot be packed in a portable storage unit.
